The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a medium sized dog, with muscular build and a short smooth coat. The breed is known for being powerful and athletic. The body of the dog should be slightly longer than it is tall, however females may be slightly longer than males.

The defining characteristics of Pit Bulls are strength, confidence, and high energy. The breed is eager to please and should be a handful of energy. American Pit Bull Terriers are well know for being a great family dog especially there love of children. However, due to the potential for dog aggression a APBT owner should take caution when introducing the dog to other dogs. APBT should show no human aggression, they should greet every stranger like a long lost friend. The APBT does not make a good guard dog.

Due to there high energy levels it is best that the breed be exercised rigorously. Daily long walks are a must for the American Pit Bull Terrier. The breeds high level of intellegence and athelicism has shown by how well it has done in performance events, including cart pulling, advanced obedience, and even Schutzhund.
